The Ultrashort bond funds have created massive financial losses. Fidelity Ultra-Short Bond Fund, symbol: FUSFX was sold to investors as safe investments that would provide “higher potential returns than money market funds, with only marginally higher risk.” The fund was laden with subprime mortgages investments.

Fidelity solicited investors and represented that the Fund as one that: “seeks a high level of current income consistent with the preservation of capital”; “allocates its assets across different market sectors and maturities”; has a “similar overall interest rate risk to the Lehman Brothers 6 Month Swap Index”; and is geared toward the “preservation of capital.” Fidelity did not properly disclose to investors the risks associated with investing in the Fund.

Ultrashort bond funds should be the most conservative and low-risk of bond funds. They are suppose to mirror the safety of money-market funds that invest in U.S. Treasury and government-guaranteed securities but with a higher yield. When market liquidity stopped, fund managers sold the funds' assets at depressed prices in order to meet redemptions.

Investors believed Ultrashort bond funds were as safe as money in the bank. The investors who got into “safe” Ultrashort bond funds that have since plummeted in value because of investments in mortgage-backed securities, many are now able to make compelling cases that they were misled about the safety of the funds by their brokers.
