BUY AND HOLD INVESTORS MAY BE ABLE TO RECOVER LOSSES IN COMMODITY ETF'S
If your stock broker or financial advisor (not online brokers like Scottrade that you trade yourself) sold you commodity ETF's you may have a claim for recovery. UNG, USO, and DBA for example are supposed to track the underlying price of the commodity, but do not do so effectively. Many brokers who sold this did not disclose the problem these ETF's have with contango or even know what contango means.
Contango is a word traders use to describe a specific market condition, when contracts for future delivery of a commodity are more expensive than near-term contracts for the same stuff. When the futures contracts that commodity funds own are about to expire, fund managers have to sell them and buy new ones; otherwise, they would have to take delivery of billions of dollars' worth of raw materials. When they buy the more expensive contracts -- more expensive because of contango -- they lose money for their investors. Contango errodes the value of the ETF as a result. This is the case for ETF's such as UNG, USO, and DBA as well as other commodity ETF's like GCC, DBC, and GSG.
ETFs are typically registered investment companies whose shares represent an interest in a portfolio of securities that track an underlying benchmark or index. (Some ETFs that invest in commodities, currencies, or commodity- or currency-based instruments are not registered as investment companies.) Unlike traditional mutual funds, shares of ETFs typically trade throughout the day on a securities exchange at prices established by the market. ETFs have evolved over the years, becoming more complex. Investors considering ETFs should evaluate each investment closely and not assume all ETFs are alike. In the last few years, a number of leveraged and inverse ETFs have been introduced to the market that are very different from the traditional variety of ETFs.
